Ceiling Fan Replacement
One of the most common jobs I get calls for as a local electrician is replacing an existing ceiling fan or installing ceiling fans in place of existing light fixtures. Typically, I ask the customer to select and provide the lighting, whether it be a fan or just a fixture, so that the fixture is to your design tastes. While replacing a ceiling fan is pretty straight-forward, there are a few considerations to take into account. Here are some things you should consider when sele

Legacy Wiring In Real Estate
When purchasing older real estate to live in, rent or flip in Phillipsburg, New Jersey , Belvidere, New Jersey or Washington, New Jersey ; one of the many things that will need attention is the building's wiring. Old buildings often contain legacy wiring types, such as the infamous "Knob and Tube" wiring method. This method, often noted on home inspection reports is a 2-wire system featuring a "hot" conductor and a neutral conductor. Each circuit is run through sets of porce

Commercial and Industrial Lighting
Interior Lighting- Fluorescent lighting became commercially available in the late 1930s, marking a large improvement over all incandescent lighting in commercial & industrial applications. Initially, tubes were T12 (12/8ths of an inch). In the 60's T8 (8/8ths of an inch in diameter) lamps began to supplant T12s. Fluorescent technology culminated in T5 lamps (5/8ths of an inch diameter) These boasted longer service life, smaller dimensions and produced a lot of light. Then LED

Light Fixtures Look Nice, But Are They Listed?
You may have noticed that on every electrical appliance or device you buy, somewhere on that device or appliance there is a tag telling you the make and model number, serial number, and electrical characteristics such as amperage and voltage. Pictured is my computer's charger, among all of that information, the UL listed logo is circled in red. "UL Listed" means that Underwriters Laboratories has tested this product and found it to meet its safety standards. Underwriters Labo

Aluminum Wiring In 1970s Homes
Certain housing developments in Lopatcong, New Jersey built in the early 1970s used single strand aluminum building wires. This wiring is deemed unsafe by today's standards. A study by the Consumer Product Safety Commission found that homes with aluminum wiring were 55 times more likely to have an outlet that reached "fire hazard conditions." This aluminum wiring was used during copper shortages for 15- and 20-amp branch circuits throughout these houses. At the time, wiring

Portable Generator Inlets
Fall and Winter mean's storms and as a result-power outages in Warren & Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Customers frequently call and ask about portable generator inlets for their home, allowing them to safely plug in a portable generator and run the essentials in their home. These are not automatic solutions like whole-home stand-by generators but can be a good alternative. These will allow you to run things like your well pump and refrigerators/freezers There are essentially

Open Ground Receptacles
One type of call I get often as an electrician in Phillipsburg, New Jersey and its surrounding areas is for open ground receptacles-that is when a receptacle has no equipment grounding conductor connected. This is commonly noted on inspection reports when a home is inspected by a representative of prospective buyers, or by a town inspector for a rental property. This "open ground" condition is very common in older homes with older wiring methods such as Knob & Tube, Cloth ins

Is Your Pool Properly Bonded?
An above ground #pool requires an equipotential bonding ring be ran in #8 solid copper around it. 18-24" off of the water, 4-6" deep all the way around the pool. In-ground pools have even more complicated bonding requirements. The pool shell, pool water, and pump bonded together to bring metallic components to the same potential and reduce the chance of shock from stray voltages in the ground…does your pool have this? If you don't see a copper wire attached to the pool filt

I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your...Service down
We had a storm blow through our area on Thursday May 23rd with heavy rain and damaging winds, blowing trees down on primary and secondary power lines, interrupting service to thousands. Did you know the power company is only responsible for maintaining the overhead service to your house to the left of the red line? Everything to the right (except for the meter itself) is maintained by the customer. -The gray service cable/conduit -Straps -Point of attachment or service hook -

More Power! Electric Service Upgrade
There are many reasons why you may want to do an electric service upgrade. You may have a completely full panel, or have a 100a service and are planning other projects that will require a more power (car chargers, pools, finished basements, welders, air compressors etc) You may notice that your electrical panel, meter box, and or service wire is old and in need of replacement. Melted Wires & Mismatched Breakers
Phillipsburg NJ- Another week, Another melted wire! Hard to say what caused this, as we don’t know if it melted 2 years ago or 20 years ago. What I did notice was the breaker this wire came off of was a General Electric and the panel was a Bryant (now Eaton BR Type) Just because a breaker fits doesn’t mean it is UL listed for use in a panel. This breaker did not clip on to the buss in the panel very well and resistance of a loose connection causes heat! Only use breakers UL l

Push-O-Matic Breakers
Some breaker/panel designs have stood the test of time and are still in production today (Square D QO, Cutler Hammer BR & CH lines). Others, like Bulldog’s (later ITE) Push O Matic breakers are considered unreliable. These are usually flagged for replacement by insurance companies when a house is sold, which is what prompted this panel’s replacement. Some other brands to look out for are Federal Pacific, Challenger and Zinsco panel boards. If you see these in your home it’s t

Improper Wire Termination
Some breakers are designed to have two wires under one breaker terminal. These Siemens breakers are not UL listed to be used this way. Home inspectors will often note this as needing correction on home inspection reports when a home is sold. Problem solved by connecting the two wires with a wire nut and running one wire to the breaker, known as a "pigtail." If you notice improper wire termination in your home's panel or this is noted in your home inspection report, give us a

Fire Prevention Week 2024
The National Fire Protection Association's Fire Prevention Week is October 6,2024-October 12, 2024. This serves to remind us that the basics matter. Things like testing your smoke detectors every month are part of the NFPA's guidance. Have you considered how old the smoke detectors in your home are? The NFPA recommends replacement of smoke detectors every 10 years, regardless of functionality. If your home was built prior to 1977 and has not been extensively renovated; chance
